Journalists Killed in Iraq
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists published a report claiming there were 88 unsolved murders of journalists in Iraq between 2000 and 2009. Incidentally, nearly all of the 88 murders occurred in 2003-2009 when the country was under American occupation and some of these eighty eight journalists died at the hands of the US and other “Coalition” soldiers. The logical question, therefore, is why Iraq is at the top of the CPJ’s “impunity index” and not the US? Blaming the Iraqis or their puppet government for the deaths of these journalists – or for any of the civilian casualties in Iraq that now stand at well over a hundred and fifty thousand – makes no more sense than blaming Poland for the horrors of Auschwitz.
Another question is what exactly makes these eighty eight dead journalists so important as to distinguish them from the tens of thousands of innocent civilians killed in Iraq during the US occupation? These journalists were well aware of the risks and most of them were well paid and risked their lives quite willingly. In other words, they had a choice. Additionally, most of these reporters are employed by news agencies in the countries that invaded Iraq. Perhaps New York should get itself a Committee to Protect Iraqi Civilians, because I don’t think a lot of people will be losing any sleep over some dead journalists.
