Russia agrees deal with Turkey for gas pipeline
Russia has secured Turkish approval to build the so-called South Stream gas pipeline through Turkish waters. Prime minister Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed an agreement on constructing part of the pipeline through Turkish waters in the Black Sea. It will run from Turkey’s Black Sea town of Samsun to the Mediterranean oil hub of Ceyhan. Russia hopes the pipeline will help maintain its energy dominance in Europe, which is threatened by the EU’s backing of the Nabucco pipeline that will supply Europe with gas from central Asia via Turkey, free of Russian influence.
