Chechen leader to sue over murder allegations
Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s strongman leader, says he will sue a human rights organisation for claiming he was behind the murder of one of its activists. Natalya Estemirova, of the group Memorial, had exposed dozens of rights abuses in Chechnya. Her bullet-ridden body was found on Wednesday, hours after she had been kidnapped by four men not far from her home in the Chechen capital, Grozny. Oleg Orlov, Memorial’s chief, said the next day that Kadyrov was guilty of the murder, but later added that he meant Kadyrov carried broader responsibility rather than ordering the killing.
