Russian Frigate Detains Somalian Pirates
The “Admiral Panteleyev” frigate of Russia’s Pacific Fleet detained a suspected pirate vessel with 29 aboard around 6pm Moscow time on Tuesday 15 kilometers from the shores of Somalia. In addition to the crew, the detained vessel was carrying seven AK-47s, various types of handguns, aluminum ladders with grappling hooks, satellite navigation equipment, multiple fuel canisters, and a large number of spent shell casings.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense officials, the detained suspects will be questioned aboard the Russian Navy ship before they are released to Somalian authorities. It is believed that this groups of pirates were responsible for the two failed attempts to board the “TF Commander” tanker manned by a Russian crew earlier today.
As of April 14, the Russian Navy received orders to maintain constant patrols in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden. “Admiral Panteleyev”, supported by a rescue vessel and two refueling ships, is patrolling Somalia’s contiguous zone (12-24 nautical miles from the coastline) in cooperation with the Combined Task Force 151. It is believed “Admiral Panteleyev” was in the area of Cape Guardafui when it detained the pirate vessel.
