Georgian Navy auctions sunken ships
Georgian media reports that the country’s Navy auctioned off three of its ships sank by the Russians during the brief war between the two countries in August of last year. The bidding on the lot of three sunken patrol boats still cluttering Poti naval base started at $10. The winner at $61,000 was Gem Aidemir, a citizen of Turkey.
Mr. Aidemir now has three months during which he must retrieve his newly-aquired fleet from the bottom of the harbor. His prized collection of sunken Georgian war vessels includes the French-built La Combattante II-class “Dioskuria” fast attack missile boat and the Soviet-made Project 206MR Vikhr-class “Tbilisi” hydrofoil missile boat.
