Politics of Fear?
Lou Dobbs – a noted Republican xenophobe and CNN’s resident Mexico-basher – is accusing Obama of engaging in “politics of fear” by trying to push the economic stimulus package through Congress. Lou says that Bush used this sort of scare tactics and now Obama is following suit. Unfurling the 650-page legislation proposal into the camera Lou was wondering just how many congressmen have actually read the document. And I was wondering if Lou read it. I am certain he didn’t, even though he’s a Harvard-educated economist. But he sure like talking about it. Perhaps Lou is thinking that our distinguished legislators needed more time to read the bailout plan. Does this mean Democrats are faster readers than Republicans?
So what is this: Obama’s politics of fear or our wishful thinking? Perhaps we just find it more comforting to think that our former and current presidents and their economic advisers were just trying to scare us and our duly-elected representatives into accepting unnecessary economic recovery plans. The alternative to this way of thinking is to accept the highly unpleasant possibility that our economy is doing really that bad. Nah, our economy is doing just fine and don’t try to scare us, Mr. President. When our national financial institutions will start falling apart and when our economy will start losing hundreds of thousands of jobs every months, then – and only then! – will we consider Obama’s obviously panicky point of view. Oh, wait…
So Republicans chose to vote against the bailout on a principle and thus ruined Obama’s vision of a bi-partisan Washington. Oh well, at least he tried. Imagine how upset this would make Obama if the entire GOP decided to disband itself. The man wouldn’t be able to sleep for at least a week! But I don’t want to give them any ideas…
