BBC World Service and Its Masters
If you are still having doubts that BBC World Service is working for the British Foreign Office, here’s something to consider. In the weeks leading to the UN Security Council vote on sanctions against Zimbabwe every daily broadcast of BBC World News opened with a lengthy and blatantly biased report on the situation in Zimbabwe. It didn’t seem to matter that BBC did not have a single reporter in Zimbabwe, somehow they still managed to fill at least ten minutes of airtime every day.
As soon as the Anglo-American draft resolution was torpedoed in the UNSC by China and Russia, suddenly BBC lost any interest in the whole Zimbabwe affair. In a matter of a single day Mugabe’s evil plans for world domination moved from the opening segment of every BBC broadcast all the way down to a ten-second sideline. The prime spot of the July 19 edition of BBC World News was taken by Barack Obama climbing aboard a plane to proceed with his “fact-finding” mission to Afghanistan – a most momentous event in international politics. The July 18 edition of BBC World News opened with the glorious news of Chinese tourists flying direct to Taiwan. Good for them. July 17 – BBC opened up with the clip showing the exchange of caskets between the good old friends: Israel and Lebanon. July 16 – the beginning of the casket story. July 15 – possible war crimes charges against the president of Sudan.
To summarize: as soon as it became clear to the Foreign Office that the scheme to oust Mugabe has failed, BBC World Service chiefs were told to lay off the Zimbabwe crack pipe. And so Zimbabwe was downgraded by BBC from the world’s number one hot spot to a minor story barely worth mentioning. The need for propaganda on Zimbabwe went away after the Russians killed the sanctions resolution. Also, BBC wouldn’t want to attract more attention to the embarrassing conclusion of the protracted Anglo-American anti-Mugabe campaign.
And so here you have it: undeniable proof that BBC World Service is an obedient servant of the Foreign Office – its sole sponsor and, evidently, its supreme master.
