BBC Looking for Kosovo Compromise
In its latest news report on Kosovo – Russia weighs options on Kosovo – BBC is wondering how Russia may respond to Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
Russia is clearly weighing up its options. It must balance its desire to maintain reasonably cordial relations with its business partners in Europe with its new assertiveness abroad… In which direction will Russia choose to go; towards compromise or confrontation? How it responds to the diplomatic test of Kosovo could begin to reveal part of the answer.
Apparently, BBC is analyzing today’s situation around Kosovo as if diplomatic negotiations about the province’s status were still ongoing. I think the choice between compromise and confrontation has been already made by KLA’s Western supporters when they encouraged Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence. They chose confrontation when Russia was still calling for compromise and continuing dialog.
The first step in this confrontation has been already made by the US and key EU members. Russia can only choose how to escalate this conflict. Much of Russia’s future actions will depend on the position of Serbia. There are politicians in Belgrade who are quite willing to let the West bomb and dismember their country for a promise of financial aid.
After casting his ballot, Boris Tadic proclaimed: “This election decides which path Serbia is going to take and what the future for Serbia and our children will be.” Well, his job should be easier now since there is less of Serbia left today.
